Hepatitis means inflammation of Liver which is caused by various factors like viruses, alcohol abuse , certain medication or toxin. There are 5 types of Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E each having its own mode of transmission and impact on health . 1] Hepatitis A (HAV) – It is spread through the ingestion of contaminated of food or water or through close contact with an infected person. It can be acute or chronic . Hepatitis A Vaccine is available and recommended for travelers to certain countries and individuals at high risk .
2] Hepatitis B ( HBV) – It is mainly transmitted through contact with infected blood, from an infected mother to her new born during childbirth or sexual contact with an infected person. It can be acute or chronic infection … chronic infection may lead to serious liver problem like cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis B Vaccine is available for children and adults.
3] Hepatitis C (HCV) – It is primarily transmitted by contact with infected blood . Common ways include sharing of needles among drug users and very rarely by sexual contact . This can be acute or chronic infection but most people infected with HCV develop chronic hepatitis , which may cause sever liver damage over time. There is no Hepatitis C Vaccine, only antiviral treatment is there .
4] Hepatitis D ( HDV) – Transmission routes are similar to those of Hepatitis B. HDV only occurs in individuals who are already infected with Hepatitis B. It can be acute or chronic infection , chronic HDV infection is typically more severe than Hepatitis B alone. Hepatitis B Vaccine provides protection against HDV.
5] Hepatitis E (HEV) – Mostly transmitted by the consumption of contaminated water or food , especially in areas with poor sanitation. Generally causes acute infection and many people recover without complications. Those who are with previous liver infection and pregnant women may lead to severe complications. There is Hepatitis E Vaccine is available but not practicing in all countries.
# Symptoms of Hepatitis –
1- Jaundice- Yellowing of the eyes and skin.
2- Fatigue – Even after adequate rest felling extremely weak and tired .
3 – Loss of appetite – A decrease in the desire to eat.
4 – Abdominal Pain – Pain or uneasy feeling in the upper right side of the abdomen because this is the place of liver.
5 – Nausea and Vomiting ..
6 – Dark urine ( usually normal urine is pale yellow in color.)
7 – Pale stools – Stools may become grayish or light-colored .
